The Kofa National Wildlife Refuge is in Arizona in the southwestern United States, northeast of Yuma and southeast of Quartzsite. The refuge, established in 1939 to protect desert bighorn sheep, encompasses over 665,400 acres of the Yuma Desert region of the Sonoran Desert. The Painted Desert Trail is quite popular, boasting a walking trail at the PDT rest area. These rugged trails are dotted with many old mines and mine encampments and lookout points.
The Imperial National Wildlife Refuge protects wildlife habitat along 30 miles of the lower Colorado River in Arizona and California, including the last un-channeled section before the river enters Mexico. Trail riders can explore multiple trails between the river and the proving grounds, trails lead to Hidden Shores, Bettys Kitchen, and many more locations.
